British Values
British values are a set of five key principles that guide how people in a modern and diverse society live and work together: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs.
Since 2014, the UK’s Department for Education has published guidance on promoting British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. All schools across the UK have a duty to actively promote these fundamental values as part of their teaching and school culture.
The Five British Values and How Students Practise Them
Democracy
Students learn the importance of having a voice and working together to make decisions that affect their community.
Example practices: taking part in class discussions, voting for class representatives, joining the Student Council, and sharing ideas respectfully during group projects.
The Rule of Law
Students understand why rules and laws exist and how they help keep everyone safe, fair, and respected.
Example practices: following school expectations, understanding classroom agreements, reflecting on behaviour choices, and recognising how consequences support fairness.
Individual Liberty
Students are encouraged to make their own choices, express opinions, and explore their interests within a supportive environment.
Example practices: choosing learning activities, expressing personal opinions in discussions, pursuing hobbies or clubs, and setting personal learning goals.
Mutual Respect
Respect builds positive relationships and a caring school community. Students learn to value others’ ideas, listen actively, and treat everyone with kindness.
Example practices: working cooperatively in teams, showing sportsmanship in games, helping peers, and using polite and thoughtful communication.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Students learn about and appreciate the many religions, cultures, and traditions that make up our diverse world.
Example practices: celebrating international days and cultural festivals, learning about world religions in class, welcoming different viewpoints, and showing curiosity about others’ traditions.
